The Bully Files Scholarship Competition

Over almost 20 years offering film programs to youth, GIFTS has provided over 1 million dollars in bursaries and scholarships. This May, we want to offer students of all ages (10-100) the chance to win a full scholarship to the 2 week Director’s Program, valued at over $1500.00. There are other prizes for runner ups and the competition is only open May 13th-26th.

To enter, help us raise awareness and funds for The Bully Files, a program that offers scholarships to bullied youth and gives them a voice to express themselves. The students with the most donations in their names to our IndieGoGo campaign for The Bully Files at igg.me/at/thebullyfiles will win scholarships for GIFTS this summer. Hurry up and get sharing!

GIFTS,
Since the end of February I have been hooked on a comedy series called Community. It is a quirky, artsy show about 7 community college students who are very diverse in age and personalities, but become best friends. There are 4 seasons so far, and the first 3 are on Netflix. There are a lot of movie and show references and one of the friends is a documentary film maker, which is cool.

I’ve been reading “Welcome to the Monkey House” by Kurt Vonnegut. It is a collection of short stories. Many of them are odd and have interesting turns. It is very fun to read, and being the technological person that I am, it is interesting to see his view on technology and the harm it can bring.

Hey GIFTS!

This month I am doing a project on Lisa Steele, a Canadian video artist and I thought I could post about this amazing medium of art! It is something that we are not necessarily as exposed to or used to in popular culture, but it is such an important art form for our time. It is able to express current issues that can allude to media and voyeurism (huge topics in our world), through interdisciplinary methods that include film, dance, theatre, body art, as well as, arguably, paint and sculpture. I also visited VIVO, a video art archive full of information and events to sign up for. Its a pretty cool place if you even want to go check it out! And if you are unfamiliar with this medium, I highly suggest the artists Lisa Steele and Paul Wong … You may learn something new if you look into them

Classic Black and White

Hey GIFTS,

In my video production class, we have been doing lots of studying of classic black and white films, our next project is to make a film in black and white. One of my favorites and timeless classics, Psycho, by the great Albert Hitchcock. That movie ( all though dated ) is just the ample of suspense. A true master of film.

Hey GIFTS!
For most of this month, I have been in Cuba without internet or any access to media other than music on my iPod. Upon returning home however I have released two videos online. One is a season end ski edit for my friend Arlo, the other is a season end snowboard edit for my friend Jade. If you are interested in snow sports check them out and be sure to share any feedback!

“Dante’s Peak”

I watched a movie called “Dante’s Peak.” excellent movie, would definitely recommend it. The main character is a seismologist that has been sent to investigate a volcano. Despite warning signs, the seismologist is continually denied from his pleas to shut the town down. Want to know the rest? Watch the movie!
