Sample School Group Schedule
At SCHOOL (Optional – during week prior to arrival at GIFTS)
Students have option to work on-line/in class with GIFTS professional script advisor coach on-line and their teacher to develop scripts for 5-minute films. GIFTS will provide script software and support. This is optional.
At GIFTS
Meals: Breakfast is served at 7:30 a.m., lunch at 12:30 p.m., and dinner at 5:30 p.m. (approximate times; may vary depending on shooting schedules).
Bed Time: Students go to bed at 10 p.m. and have lights out by 10:30 p.m. every night except Thursday.
Day 1 Sunday Evening
6:00 p.m. Travel to Galiano Island via BC Ferries – see Transportation Plan
9:00 p.m. Arrive at GIFTS, room assignments, orientation, and introductions to staff
10:00 p.m. Bed time
Day 2 Monday – Tech Workshops
7:30 a.m. Wake-up time each day except Friday
7:30-8:30 a.m. Breakfast
8:30-9:15 a.m. Mentor assignments, editing suite assignments, pre-production meetings regarding actors, props and locations. Half the students shoot on Tuesday and the other half Wednesday
9:30-12:30 p.m. Tech Workshop – Mentors and/or technical staff will go over production equipment and camera operation with the students
12:30-1:30 p.m. Lunch
1:30-5:15 p.m. In-camera edit exercise to develop technical skills
5:30-6:30 p.m. Dinner
6:30-7:30 p.m. Kitchen clean-up/free time. Students encouraged to work on storyboards and shot lists.
7:30-10:00 p.m. Meeting with students shooting Tuesday, mentors, and director to finalize shooting plans. Students finish storyboards and shots lists and watch and discuss a film if time allows
Day 3 Tuesday – Shoot Day A
8:45-5:15 p.m. Shoot with mentor on location
7:30-9:30 p.m. Meeting with students shooting Wednesday, mentors, and director to finalize shooting plans. Students finish storyboards and shots lists. Students who shot Tuesday capture footage to computer
Day 4 Wednesday – Shoot Day B
8:45-5:15 p.m. Shoot with mentor on location
7:30-9:30 p.m. Students capture footage to computer. If time allows, students watch and discuss a film
Day 5 Thursday – Post-Production
8:30-9:00 a.m. Edit workshop with tech staff
9:00-5:30 p.m. Students edit in groups. Mentors and tech staff offer assistance and critiques. Students select music from GIFTS library or create their own using sound studio and music software
6:30-7:30 p.m. Kitchen clean-up/free time and email access
7:30-10:30 p.m. Mentors critique rough cut of films. Students continue editing to finish fine cut before bed
11:00 p.m. Bed time
Day 6 Friday – Final Post-Production
7:30-12:00 p.m. Students edit color correction, compositing, and graphics; complete soundtrack composition and audio layering; and insert credits and final touches
12:00-12:30p.m Students watch final cut of films with tech staff and mentors before exporting. Students fill out video data forms, biographies, and release forms
12:30-1:15 p.m. Students pack.
1:45-4:00 p.m. Final barbecue and trip to beach
4:00-4:20 p.m. Transport to ferry in bus – See Transportation Plan
After departing GIFTS
At SCHOOL
Each student returns with a DVD of all the films created that week. Many groups hold a screening for family and friends.
Please note that the ferry schedule changes regularly and are dependant of the day and season of travel; all ferry times should be confirmed on the BC Ferries website.
