Advanced Film & Hand Processing

Prerequisite: Must have completed a Super8 film & hand processing (FLM) MIP course.

This course is an advanced version of our most experimental and creative session. This process-oriented course is for those interested in expanding their skills and technique in the world of film processing. We discuss film theory and the work of experimental filmmakers, as part of an ongoing dialogue of what can be imagined in the medium. We also discuss film stock, light, optics, safe chemical handling and advanced darkroom practices. The real fun begins when the demonstrations are over, our students then go out and shoot 16mm films.

Next comes hand-processing and further manipulation/production with tinting, toning, rephotography and cameraless processes. After the production is complete, the films will be edited by hand, cut and splice, whereas the prerequisite course had students transferring to digital for a computer edit. The final positive prints will be made by contact printing using improvised devices and modified technologies constructed during the week.
