Twyla Roscovich Scholarship

 Twyla Roscovich

The late environmental filmmaker and activist Twyla Roscovich is the inspiration for a donor advised fund and scholarship to send young filmmakers to the school where it all started for her, Gulf Island Film and Television School (GIFTS) located on Galiano Island.

Family and colleagues have established the Twyla Roscovich Memorial Fund at Tides Canada Foundation. All donations to the fund support qualified donees that advance protection of the environment through film. The campaign goal is $25,000 that will fund an annual $1,000 scholarship granted to a young filmmaker to attend a weeklong intensive workshop at GIFTS in perpetuity. The scholarship will be administered through the Arts in Action Society.

An initial donation of $5,000 has come from Pacific Wild Alliance, an organization that works to protect wildlife and their habitat in the Great Bear Rainforest in BC, a region with a deep connection for Roscovich and the setting of many of her films.

Ian McAllister, executive director of Pacific Wild commented, “I made my first film with Twyla almost 20 years ago and have yet to meet another filmmaker who instils so much passion into their work.  She did more to protect the environment than many realize. I think she would be pleased to know that her legacy will live on through the work of other activist filmmakers.”

This fund was launched after a GoFundMe campaign in Roscovich’s name reached over $60,000 in two weeks for an endowment to her four-year-old daughter Ruby Lynn Ross.

The memorial scholarship with GIFTS will be awarded through an advisory committee headed by Roscovich’s father, Glen Roscovich and awarded to a budding filmmaker who will attend a week-long workshop including room and board, the same workshop that Roscovich attended when she was 17, launching her filmmaking career.

“We are overwhelmed by the support pouring in for her young daughter, Ruby. Many people mentioned they wanted to contribute to something that held meaning for Twyla and her work as a filmmaker.  We’re hoping this scholarship fund will do just that,” said Glen Roscovich.
