Practice
Makes Perfect
With 15 films under their collective belt, four young women collaborate
on an award-winning project.
Galiano Island, BC, Canada: The Gulf Islands Film &
Television School aka GIFTS is proud to announce that She Waits will be
screening at the Victoria
Independent Film and Video Festival on Friday, February 8th at
7pm at Herman's Jazz Club, 753 View St, Victoria. It is part of the "A
Cruel and Demanding World" Shorts Program.
She Waits
is an experimental drama video created in 4 days at GIFTS. Directed by
Carly Vanderbasch, Amanda Letang, Caitlin Croteau and Vanessa Jones and
shot on digital video, She Waits is a metaphorical journey into the mind
of a young woman waiting in anxiety.
Even though these filmmakers were teenaged high school
students when they created She Waits, they already had a list of credits
to each of their names. Terra Poirier, GIFTS' Distribution Coordinator
commented, "We can't even keep up with these young women. Each of
them proves beyond a doubt that women and girls are on the cutting edge
of the film and art world. I can't even list all of their accomplishments.
Watch out for these women in the coming years. They're among western Canada's
top new filmmakers. What an honour for GIFTS to have been part of their
fantastic beginnings."
This film has also screened at the Toronto International
Teen Movie Festival and at GIFTS's own EyeLens
Film and Video Festival where it was nominated for Outstanding
Cinematography and was awarded for Outstanding Soundtrack (composed &
designed by Tyr Jami, Sam Pettit, Megan Dheensaw and Calliane Bachman,
all Soundtrack Composition students at GIFTS).
Carly Vanderbasch, of Shawnigan Lake, BC, has made 6
films at GIFTS since 1997, including WAD which was nominated at EyeLens
for Outstanding Comedy and Community
which received 2nd place for 4 different awards at the 2000 Greenlight
Youth Film & Video Festival - Best Cinematography, Best Music Selection,
Best Short and Best Director. Both WAD and Community are among the Top
5 Picks at CBC's 120seconds.com. Carly is now attending the Film and Television
Studies program at Capilano College.
Amanda Letang, from Langley, BC, adds She Waits to a
portfolio of 5 GIFTS films, including Fairy
Gothmother, which was created during the same week as She Waits
and received the award for Outstanding Comedy at EyeLens 2001. Amanda
herself was also nominated for Outstanding Acting in her starring role
in this film as the "sweet girl" who undergoes a transformation
to Goth with the help of her Fairy Gothmother. Amanda also co-directed
two PSA's at last year's ICBC Road Sense Video Project at GIFTS. One of
these films, Cars Aren't
Toys, went on to receive 2nd place for PSA in the For Kids, By
Kids category at the prestigious Burbank International Children's Film
Festival in California.
Caitlin Croteau, Victoria, BC, has been creating films
at GIFTS since 1999. Her first project, Slugzilla, was nominated for Outstanding
Special Effects at EyeLens 2000 and has screened at the Canadian International
Annual Film Festival and the Greenlight Youth Film & Video Festival.
She also shares director credit on the aforementioned award-winning Fairy
Gothmother and just recently co-directed a visual effects and animation piece
called Johnny Unbreakable at GIFTS Summer 2001.
Vanessa Jones, hailing from Lantzville, BC started off
her film career in 1999 at GIFTS by creating Family Values, which received
an Honorable Mention for Student / Amateur Drama at the 2000 Vancouver
Island Film, Video and New Media Festival. She went on to produce 4 more
films including sharing director credit on Fairy Gothmother, Confusion
and Lost and Found.
