2003 MIP Sessions with Classical Animation

This one-week course gives students an intensive introduction into the realm of animated motion and the process of animation production. This unique hands-on course production streams on the elements of motion, technical production skills and the creative process of animation using 3D materials, puppets, cut-outs and clay. Working in groups of 3 - 4, students spend the first two days of the course in tech workshops, experimenting with different materials and motion capture techniques using the SONY TRV900 digital video camera. The in-camera edit exercises allow the students to see the immediate results of their creative experiments in motion and will guide them through the process of developing ideas for an animated short. Ideas are storyboarded into a visual script and students prepare the set and materials for their shoot. The next two days are spent in intense production mode.
Following their storyboard, the students are guided through the process of making their animation come to life under the camera. Tech workshops are taken in foley (sound recording) techniques and students begin the challenging and amusing process of recording their sound effects. On the fifth day, once the shoot and foley sessions are complete, the scenes are edited together on a non-linear editor. The finished short animation is transferred to video. Be prepared to spend a lot of time brainstorming, experimenting and laughing your head off. People of all artistic backgrounds will enjoy and benefit from the unforgettable experience of learning how to produce this popular form of entertainment!
