The one-week Media Intensive Programs (MIP) offer students an action-packed week of hands-on training in an innovative live/work media centre on Galiano Island. Drama, Documentary, Animation and Visual Effects are among the many production focuses you can choose. Since 1995, hundreds of youth and adults have been immersed in the world of desktop video / animation / multimedia / film production at GIFTS.

Every week students work with other creatively motivated students and accomplished filmmakers to produce a short video or animation. The small size of the production teams (3-4) ensures that each person participates in every facet of the production process and gets to work on the professional level equipment available at the school. The creative and technical aspects are crystal clear and uninterrupted in the safe, quiet setting of a beautiful island. The students are involved in everything from the initial brainstorming session to the final edit and sound mix. They’re in the driver’s seat and make all the major decisions required at every stage of the process. Respect for the students’ creative autonomy is part of what makes GIFTS so successful.

General MIP Outline - Focus on Drama
The schedules of each particular focus of The Media Intensive Program are similar in structure to the Drama schedule although there are variations based on course content.

  • Sunday: Students arrive on Galiano Island (you will be met at the ferry terminal by the film school bus); check into rooms; introductions & ice breaking exercises.
  • Monday: Media literacy, visual storytelling and scriptwriting workshops. Complete first draft of script.
  • Tuesday: Tech workshops: camera, lighting & sound. Complete final draft of script; Storyboarding the script & pre-production.
  • Wednesday-Thursday: On-location shoots, begin post-production - digitize and log source footage.
  • Friday: Editing, sound design, creation of credit sequence.
  • Saturday: Public screening of the videos at 2 p.m. Family and friends are welcome to attend. Catch the ferry home with a copy of all videos produced during the session.

The Media Intensive Program will expand your options, help you figure out where in the world of media you want to be, and give you the skills to start. Not only do you leave with concrete skills, you also gain confidence, leadership and creative problem solving abilities which will help you excel in whichever career path you choose.
